Our collaborative paper led by Arianna Ortega Sanabria investigates how electrode placement and electric-field steering can selectively activate nerve-fibre subpopulations. The accepted manuscript was published online in Journal of Neural Engineering on 7 September 2026.

In experiments in rats, longitudinal intrafascicular electrodes placed at different locations within the same fascicle recruited distinct muscle regions. Bipolar stimulation further changed recruitment compared with monopolar stimulation. High-density epimysial electromyography allowed these differences to be measured.

These results identify complementary ways to improve selectivity: choosing where electrodes sit within a fascicle and adjusting how current flows between them.
